Multiple news sources have reported that Celebrity Cruises’ ship Infinity crashed into a dock in Ketchikan, Alaska . The accident happened between 2 pm – 2.30 pm June 3. No injuries were reported in the accident.
The city’s ports and harbors director Steve Corporon reportedly estimated the damage to the dock will cost between 2 and 3 million dollars to repair. Although the Coast Guard has not yet announced a determination of the official cause of the incident, there is information that winds in the area were reported to be gusting to around 45 miles per hour.
The cruise ship crashed into the Berth 3 dock and engineers and contractors ar going to take a closer look at the damage. News reports state that there was damage to the ship including a hole in the ship visible above its waterline. The dock for now cannot be used. The repairs will be completed in about one to two months, according to Steve Corporon who actually set a very optimistic deadline.
The ship had been battered by strong winds and that was the main reason for the incident. Fortunately, there were no reports for injuries of either the crew members or ship’s guests. No pollution was reported at all.
Celebrity Infinity is a Millennium class ship, 965 feet long and with a maximum occupancy of 2,170 passengers and crew. The ship debuted in 2001 and underwent an eight million dollars renovation and refurbishment in 2007. Among its amenities is a two-story theater, a two-story dining room, and a 40- seat restaurant with original artefacts from the SS United States.
