The cruise line industry is trying to respond to the increasing demand for vacations at sea. As a result, more new cruise ships will hit the water this year. The number of cruise ships is expected to double before 2020.
Carnival Corp., the world’s largest cruise ship operator said last Wednesday it plans to add new vessels to four of its 10 cruise brands in 2016, increasing its fleet size from 99 to 103 cruise ships. A total of 17 ships are planned to be delivered to the company in the next four years.
The four new ships will join Carinival’s Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Seabourn and AIDA Cruises during the second and fourth quarters of the year, officials from cruise giant said.
These four new Carnival Corporation ships are scheduled to debut in 2016.
- Carnival Vista, the largest ship for Carnval Cruise Line, will debut in Europe in May. The 3,954-passenger ship will feature the first IMAX theater at sea, SkyRide a suspended cycling activity and the line’s first on-board brewery. The ship will arrive in PortMiami in November year-round cruises to the Caribbean.
- Holland America Line’s Koningsdam will launch in April 2016. The 99,500-ton, 2,650-passenger vessel is currently under construction at shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy. Koningsdam, will mark the first in its Pinnacle Class. It will be the biggest ship in the fleet. Its name “Koning” means “king” in Dutch.The ship will feature a B.B. King’s Blues Club, several fine dining restaurants and there will be a 270-degree LED projection in the ship’s main lounge for performances and panoramic special effect shows.
- AIDA Cruises will receive its AIDAprima in April. The 1,643-cabin ship is expected to be one of the most technologically advanced ships globally. It will feature a transparent dome for poolside guests called “The Beach Club,” a high ropes course and the new AIDA Mini Club, offering child care for kids six months and up.
- Seabourn’s Seabourn Encore will be delivered in December. The 600-passenger luxury ship will have private balconies in every suite. It will feature a main show venue called the Grand Salon on Deck 6 and The Club which will offer custom-crafted cocktails, canapes and live music as well as a casino.
